In real life, power and influence travel through hierarchies' of small, exclusive groups of individuals who trust each other. In fact, it's rare to find someone who has more than 4 or 5 TRUE friends. Everyone else is an acquaintance.
For this same reason, by limiting the number of online "friends" in your network, you're forced to be more selective and put more work into nurturing those relationships. When you put quality before quantity, you change the entire context of the interaction.
